  • We suggest that you use Eclipse, an "industrial-strength" open-source Integrated Development Environment that supports the execution and debugging for the multiple languages we will be using. In particular, we recommend installing Eclipse Standard. Eclipse works 'out of the box' with Java, so you need only to install a plug-in for C/C++. Once you have installed Eclipse, the general procedure to install plug-ins is the same for all languages. In general, you must install a plug-in for the language, and then point Eclipse to the interpreter or compiler for the language.

    To install C/C++ with Eclipse, we recommend the CDT plugin. The best way to install CDT is from within Eclipse (follow the Help:Install New Software menu option). A useful set of instructions for doing this is here. On both Mac and PC, you must install a C/C++ compiler and associated utilities. If you are using a Mac, with an Apple ID you can download the command line tools package from the Apple Developer site. If you are on a PC, you must install either MinGW or Cygwin.

  • For functional programming, we will use Racket, a popular implementation of the Scheme functional programming language.

  • How to configure an Eclipse project to use Java 6: Right click on the project, hover the mouse over "Build Path", and then select "Configure Build Path". Or, go to Project -> Properties in the menu bar and go to the build path. Then select the "Libraries" tab and select the JRE System Library. Click Edit (or just double click) and click the drop down menu of "Execution environment". Now select JavaSE-1.6, click Finish and OK.
